About Shigaraki...
An origin of Shigaraki ware is that a tile was baked for Shigaraki-gu palace building by the Emperor Shomu in A.D. 742. Since then for about 1250 years was being learned about as a town of pottery. It's ranked as one of medieval six old kilns with an area such as Seto, Tokoname, Echizen, Bizen and Tanba.
The simple rustic beauty is the feature for traditional Shigaraki ware.
When bakes and tightens Shigaraki clay that is little iron, the color of scarlet slightly appears. A grain of the feldspar included in clay will sprout and be the feel of rough. The light green natural overgraze which flowed to a tightened clay surface and baked in a kiln is beautiful.
Big attention was collected at Shigaraki ware in the ceremonial tea which became popular from Muromachi era. Masters of ceremonial tea at time found beauty in the crack, a burn, natural overgrazed and the distortion which invents accidentally by baking in a kiln.
A present-day ceramics worker in Shigaraki is particular about this traditional baking, too. It's an ITCHIN method, a bold brush mark and china-painting and the more modern taste is pursued, and the creation is continued.
Even an ornament of the raccoon dog as a lucky charm is famous from the modern times.
