JAGAMA: the climbing kiln

Demonstration of Hikidashi-raku

You can see a demonstration of Hikidashi-raku. Hikidashi-raku means a dynamic pottery technique that taken out of the pottery in the firing at a high temperature from the kiln and buried in pine needles to coloration with re-combustion.

Our technical capabilities

Our company has a history of 140 years, we have made a pottery match the era. In Osaka Expo in 1970 held we have created a "Tower of the Sun" of Taro Okamoto. In addition to the Osaka Expo, we have been exhibited in Paris Expo and Aichi Expo. We baked your work with high technology of the company that has experienced the Expo three times.

Glaze to be used in the finishing of the work, of course, is our product. You will choose your favorite finished color from five types of glaze; Gorgeous red , black reminiscent of Raku wear’s black , green and yellow likes discoloration, and white with elegant warm.

In the pottery class, you can experience making the work using the clay of Shigaraki. Work which had you create, we will finish it to dry, put glaze, and bake. Baking will be using a gas kiln. The finished work after about one month to one and a half months, we will send to you (shipping is extra).

Course of electric potter's wheel, which will be a little for the experienced, you can feel free to join pottery course from children to the elderly. Because you form the clay rotating with an electric potter's wheel, you can make a vessel of circular form such as tea cup and bowl. Because you'll need to Sitting in front of the electric potter's wheel, not available in the remains of the wheelchair. Since the twelve electric potter's wheels are located in OOGOYA, you can enjoy a making at the same time, even if you come with your family.

Course of Painting, you create a work with painting on unglazed ware. You can feel free to join pottery course to the elderly from children. Even while the wheelchair available. (We offer a wheelchair seat.)

Because you use the both of course clay and paint, please come in clothes that do not may be dirty. Since there is a hand-wash field with a water heater , you can wash your hands after the end.

Hand forming 50-minute course

This is an introductory course to create the shape stacked the clay in string-like. It can be made a wide range works what you like, such as cup, bowl, and ornament. From 500g of the clay, about one bowl can be made.
You will choose your favorite finished color from five types of glaze of our production (red, black, green, yellow, and white).

Hand forming clay work three works in 1kg is \ 3,000 yen (excluding tax) course

It is very profitable course that can be fired three works in hand forming. Because with a lecture by OOGOYA staff, you will be happy to challenge with confidence in what you might be a little difficult. Electric potter's wheel 50 minutes Course

From inexperienced to advanced experience, you can enjoy a full-fledged pottery. From works made from 2 kg of clay, pick two works to finish and bake.
You can form the shape circular shape ware such as cup and bowl on a turning wheel.
You will choose your favorite finished color from five types of glaze of our production (red, black, green, yellow, and white).

Painting experience course

You can paint on the foundation for painting by six colors.

We prepare the foundation for the painting; bowl, cup, cup and saucer, raccoon dog piggy bank, ashtray, dish, small base, tile, and etc.

JAGAMA: the climbing kiln

There is a climbing kiln named JAGAMA built with Shigemi Mitoma who is the OOGOYA’s traditional arts and crafts master next to the pottery class building.
This kiln made with 35 times of inclination is also baked beautifully by a short period and is the unusual kiln which is only here in Shigaraki.

We stuff a work into a climbing kiln, and keep burning Japanese red pine 24 hours per 5 or 6 days. The scarlet color called “hiiro” and beautiful green of vidro appears by the natural overgrazed.
Old Shigaraki ware was baked by such a kiln built with hand, and the feature was the color of the natural overglaze by baking climbing kiln.
But Japanese red pine’s firewood is very expensive, and another kiln such as a gas or an electric kiln spreads, almost no climbing kiln is used present. Therefore the work calcined by a climbing kiln is very valuable.

The work baked up by this JAGAMA kiln is displayed in Narita International Airport terminal second satellite arrival concourse.
This exhibition makes "Japanese hand work" a concept.
An art director is Mr. Yukio Yoshioka who is a deep person of attainments in Japanese traditional culture and a dyeing and weaving historian.
The craftsman's hand work to which a bamboo, a tile and plaster are transmitted from something arts and crafts-like such as japan and lacquer work from the old days was developed as 12 art works.

There are many works that potted by Mitoma Shigemi and baked in this JAGAMA kiln in the traditional work gallery of arts and crafts at the OOGOYA’s 2nd floor.
When there is a favorite work, it's possible to buy it.
Mitoma Shigemi is a few expert at making of large clay works in Shigaraki.
Making of large clay works is difficult and need the speed, the physical strength and care to clay.

Shigaraki triennale

In July 2010, university students who gathered from all around Japan produced Shigaraki triennale exhibition work at OOGOYA’s pottery class.
A lot of original works have been finished with the guidance of Miho who is the OOGOYA’s traditional arts and crafts master.

Herb garden

There is an herb garden around OOGOYA‘s pottery class building.
We use the herb brought up here in herbal tea at our cafe restaurant.
